Metatarsal Shortening Osteotomy

A long lesser metatarsal can lead to common toe problems.  A shortening metatarsal is done to help to prevent future complications.  These complications include plantar plate tear, hammer toe, claw toe, and crossover toe deformity.  Once these complications have occurred, the surgeon may choose a metatarsal shorting osteotomy to decompress the MTP joint to decrease the tension on dynamic soft tissues.
