How to Polish a Scope

Hello, this is Jared Mundy, one of the product managers for the Synergy Visualization team. This video is going to discuss several techniques on how to polish your arthroscope. Throughout the video, what we're going to do is keep the light guide and camera attached to the scope. Typically these would not be attached while you're polishing an Arthroscope this would be in the central sterile area, and the scope would be detached from the camera and the light guide. But again, for demonstration purposes, we would like to be able to show you what is on the screen. So with that I have the light source on as well. So what we can see right now is if I hold this white white towel against the tip, you can see that this is a pretty clean scope. I don't really have any marks on there at all. So what I'm going to do for demonstration purposes is place a mark on there. So I've got you know, any, any sort of stainless steel that bumps into it will will mark it up. So you'll see I'm going to put a mark on the end. And when I bring the towel back, you'll see that. Oh yeah. We've got some good marks on there now so I can't I can't wipe this off no matter what I do with a towel. So let me demonstrate the effectiveness of the polishing pad right now. I will grab one of these pads. You'll see that I have my thumb placed firmly in the middle and on the back side. I'm sort of cradling it between my index finger and middle finger. I'll place that on the tip of the scope and just give it one, two, three swipes, and we'll go back and just show you that that mark is now gone. With this technique we're going to use the polishing paste. This polishing paste is shipped with every single scope that we've ever shipped. It is available on Arthrex for order. It's highly recommended that your central sterile departments do keep this in stock, as it will allow them to keep their scopes in good working order. So the way to use polishing paste is First unscrew the cap. You'll see that there's a little cone on the top there that's to break the seal on the inside here. So you just turn the cap around and pop the top, and you'll see that you've broken the seal. Now we can actually use the polishing paste. So what I like to do is place a little bit of polishing paste. Right on. You know what? I'm going to shut this light off so that we can see the application right on the tip of the scope. So you see that after you squeeze some of the paste out, it should go onto the scope pretty nicely. You don't need a ton. So just that, just that amount is probably good. Place this down on the blue towel and just kind of move back and forth. Kind of like you're using a pencil eraser. It's a little bit tough to see on the blue towel, but the paste actually turns black. This is a chemical reaction between the paste and the metal. So no matter how clean your scope is, this paste will always turn black. So don't don't continually just keep polishing your scope thinking that it's dirty. So once you get to about you know, maybe about this duration, I suggest moving to another part of the towel and then just taking that excess off. So once again, you'll kind of see me polishing this off here. And once you've done that, you should be able to do a visual check and all of that, all of that any markings that were on there will be off. This is an additional polishing technique. I'm going to take the polishing paste. We'll place some of it on the towel. And we want to make sure that we place the part of the towel with the polishing paste right on the tip of the scope, so you'll see. Press this towel right down onto the scope. I'm going to flip it over the top and making sure that I'm holding the high side on the back side. I'm just going to use my thumb to polish the tip of the scope. And again, you want to do this for a duration of about ten to 20s. So as you can see, I've turned the light source on. And once again we're taking a look at the end of the scope. You can see that we've polished any defect off of the end, and the scope is now in pristine working order. This is the proper hand positioning when you don't have a camera or light guide hooked up to your scope. Take some polishing paste. Place it on the towel. Hold your scope with the. This is what I call the high side of the scope. What you want to do is take your finger and support it from the back side. And what I'm going to do is now place it face down onto the polishing paste and move this back and forth, and you'll see that the paste starts to turn black. And we've got our scope supported really well here. You should perform this movement back and forth for a duration of about ten to 20s, and then continue on with your sterilization protocol. The hand positioning for the other technique, where we're using our thumb to polish should look something like this. You'll see, now that I'm holding the scope this way, I want to cradle cradle again the high side with my fingers down here. Because what we're going to end up doing is putting our thumb right down on the face of the scope and kind of moving in a circular fashion, sort of like this, except we'll have the towel on there. So now we're going to take the towel, make sure that the paste is contacting the end of the scope. I'll put my thumb over the top here. And again we're just going to polish the end just like that. And again duration for this should be about ten to 20s. You will see the paste turn black on both occasions. And when you're done with this you can continue on with your sterilization protocol.
