Employee Spotlight: Matt Krueger Helps Keep Students ENGAGED in Education This Summer
We’re proud to highlight employees and the contributions they’re making to the community, such as Software Development Supervisor Matt Krueger and his recent time spent volunteering as a judge for The Immokalee Foundation’s ENGAGE Summer Academy app-building contest. 
Close to 30 high school students participated in the six-week summer program. The beginning of the camp refined students’ writing skills with a focus on college application essays. The last two weeks of the program were dedicated to career skills and challenged students to create an app that solves a community problem.
Matt shared, “It was great to see the students’ pride in their work and how much they were able to accomplish in a short period of time.”
Students worked in pairs to design their own apps for Android devices using blocks-based programming developed by MIT. Some of Matt’s favorite student apps included: Grocery Run, which partners with local stores to deliver groceries to homes, Venenoso, an app that identifies poisonous plants and animals and treatments for symptoms and Combining Immokalee, whose creators recognized a need for cultural understanding in Immokalee. This app encourages users to educate themselves about different cultures in the area by reading relevant stories and sharing family recipes.
The creators of the top three apps were awarded college scholarships between $250 and $500 each. Plus, as a surprise, each student was awarded a $100 scholarship for their hard work.
