In this animation, we will show you a type of partial knee replacement due to arthritis of the patellofemoral joint. The knee consists of the shinbone or tibia, thighbone or femur, and the kneecap or patella. The knee is divided into three compartments. The inside part of the knee or medial. The outside part of the knee or lateral. And the front of the knee between the kneecap and thigh bone or patellofemoral in knee arthritis. The cartilage on the end of the bone slowly wears away, causing pain and irritation. In severe cases, it results in bone on bone contact. In the surgery, your doctor will remove the affected bone on the patella. The remaining bone is then sized and prepared for the final implant through a series of precise guided steps. Your doctor determines the position and size of the femoral implant. Next, your doctor will use an additional guide to determine the amount of amount of affected bone to be removed. A specific guide is then used to determine the appropriate size of your femoral implant through the next series of steps. Your doctor prepares the femur for final implantation. A trial implant is used to ensure accuracy of the previously performed steps, and to make preparations for fixation of the final femoral implant. The trial is removed. Finally, bone cement is placed on both the femoral and patellar implants and they are secured to the bone. This completes the patellofemoral knee replacement.
