BioSync® Anatomic Reconstruction Wedge

Biosync. Anatomic reconstructive wedges provide an alternative to donor bone, most commonly for Evans and cotton procedures performed for realignment of the foot. Biosync wedges are three dimensional titanium scaffolds that allow for bone and tissue ingrowth. Biosync technology can enhance both growth and healing, as well as add support for the realigned bones in the Evans wedge technique. An incision is made on the outside of the foot. Your surgeon cuts the bone to allow for placement of the BioSync wedge. Next, a pin is placed on both sides of the cut bone, and a special instrument or distractor is placed over the pins to allow for opening of the bone in a controlled manner. The distractor is opened until your surgeon achieves the desired correction. Then your surgeon chooses the appropriately sized wedge. The central hole in the wedge may be filled with additional bone to allow for optimal healing. The BioSync wedge is first placed under the threaded inserter. After the BioSync wedge is inserted into, place the distractor pins and threaded handle are then removed. The BioSync wedges allow your surgeon the choice of using up to two screws to help stabilize the implant. In addition, a small plate may be used if your surgeon deems necessary in the cotton wedge technique. An incision is made over the top of the foot. Your surgeon cuts the bone to allow for placement of the BioSync wedge. Next, a pin is placed on both sides of the cut bone, and a distractor is placed over the pins to allow for opening the bone in a controlled manner. After choosing the appropriate size, your surgeon will implant the BioSync wedge. The shape of the BioSync wedge mirrors the shape of the cuneiform bone to ensure a perfect fit. Then the distractor pins and threaded handle are removed, completing the repair. If desired, your surgeon may choose to add an additional plate for support.
