Achilles Tendon Repair with SpeedBridge™ System

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. It connects the two large muscles at the back of the calf to the heel. Insertional Achilles tendinitis is a painful and disabling condition where the tendon attaches to the heel bone calcaneus, causing redness, pain, and swelling. Some patients who do not respond to the initial treatment may require surgical treatment. Your doctor may use Achilles SpeedBridge to reattach the Achilles tendon after a thorough cleaning of the area. The surgeon makes an incision in the back of the leg over the Achilles tendon. The incision is carried down to where the Achilles tendon is on the calcaneus. The tendon is then cut at this insertion, allowing the surgeon to easily access the damaged tendon and expose the bump on the back of the heel, also known as haglund's. Prominence. He removes the haglund's prominence, and the bone is prepared for the first bone anchor called a SwiveLock. Next, a needle that is attached to the stitches coming from the SwiveLock is passed through the tendon, allowing the tendon to return to its original position. The surgeon will now prepare two additional drill holes in the calcaneus, just below the insertion of the Achilles tendon. The next two stitches, one taken from each SwiveLock which was previously secured into position, will be retrieved and loaded into a new SwiveLock. These stitches will then be placed with perfect tension into the freshly prepared bone tunnel. This step is repeated for the remaining stitches for placement into the remaining bone tunnel. The tails of the remaining stitches will be cut flush, leaving a secured low profile knotless fixation. The surgeon will then repair the initial midline incision that was made in the beginning of the procedure.
