Distal Femoral Osteotomy

In situations involving lateral unicompartmental arthritis unresponsive to conservative treatment options, with a deformity analysis showing a femoral malalignment, a lateral distal femoral opening wedge osteotomy with one of the Arthrex distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) systems is a safe and reproducible procedure. The simplified open wedge technique is performed from the distal femoral diaphyseal-metaphyseal flare, avoiding surgical exposure to the medial side of the distal femoral region. The osteotomy is done with dedicated instrument sets and finally secured with one of our femoral osteotomy plates and titanium bicortical and cancellous screws.

The PEEKPower™ lateral distal femoral osteotomy (LDFO) plates are made of a carbon–fiber-reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF-PEEK), which supports bone healing and avoids overlying soft-tissue adhesion. In conjunction with titanium multidirectional locking and compression screws, the PEEKPower LDFO system provides a stable fixation and helps to safely manage eventual hinge fractures.

The titanium ContourLock™ distal femoral opening wedge osteotomy plates are thin and low-profile, thus preventing overlying soft-tissue irritation. The titanium plates are attached to bone using 4.5 mm and 6.5 mm cancellous or cortical screws that seat flush to the plate surface. Additionally, each screw can be pivoted within the plate's mobile bushing system to optimize placement prior to being locked to the plate, creating a rigid construct.

To help promote healing and provide added rigidity to the repair, orthobiologics such as allograft wedges or INNOTERE* 3D scaffolds or paste may be used to fill the gap. This consists of synthetically produced calcium phosphates, which are similar to that of natural bone.
