Arthrex Launches iBalance® Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty System

NAPLES, FL – February 9, 2012 – Arthrex has launched the iBalance® Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty (UKA) System, a complete, minimally invasive, instrument and implant platform for the treatment of degenerative or traumatic osteoarthritis of the knee.  The system marks the company’s significant expansion into the total knee arthroplasty market.
“While Arthrex is already well established as the world leader in sports medicine procedures, we are very excited about taking the same formula for success and applying it to the total joint market,” said Timothy Hoover, Group Product Manager for Arthrex’s Knee/Hip Product Development Team.  “The iBalance UKA System represents yet another innovative development that will help surgeons treat their patients better.”
The iBalance UKA System performs partial knee resurfacing, and is indicated to treat all stages of degenerative or traumatic osteoarthritis of the knee.  It consists of highly anatomic femoral and tibial resurfacing implants, intuitive instrumentation, and a straightforward and reproducible minimally invasive surgical technique that facilitates accuracy and efficiency, and optimal implant positioning and placement.  It is one of very few systems that can be used not only on the medial side of the knee, but also the lateral side.
The iBalance UKA System provides significant advantages over some of the more traditional treatments.  It allows surgeons to precisely balance knee stability through all ranges of motion, and to preserve more of the patient’s healthy bone and surrounding tissue, which results in a more natural feeling knee and function following surgery.  It’s also less invasive and requires less surgical time than some other knee resurfacing techniques.
Clinical studies have compared the iBalance UKA System favorably to total knee arthroplasty in patients’ long-term outcomes.

Arthrex’s iBalance product line also includes the iBalance High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) System, a novel alternative to knee replacement for the treatment of varus malalignment.  For more information and surgical animations of both the iBalance UKA System and the iBalance HTO System, visit Arthrex’s patient education website:
