Arthrex Celebrates International Women in Engineering Day

Arthrex celebrates International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) by recognizing the accomplishments of the women engineers who are critical to the company’s growth and success.

INWED is an annual holiday observed on June 23, which was the date of the Women’s Engineering Society’s founding in the United Kingdom in 1919. INWED’s mission is to raise awareness of the exciting careers and opportunities within the industry and to encourage more young women to pursue educational paths and careers in engineering, which remains a largely male-dominated field.

This year, we are highlighting several women product engineers who’ve contributed to the development of Arthrex’s innovative products and technology.

Senior Engineering Manager Michelle Morar; Arthrex Inc.

My biggest product release so far in my 21-year career at Arthrex is the Mini Comprehensive Fixation (CFS) system for the hand and foot, which comes in 1.0 mm, 1.4 mm, 1.6 mm, 2.0 mm and 2.4 mm options. This is a comprehensive solution for bone fragment fixation and fusion needs in extremities and trauma pathologies. This set also paved the way for my subsequent release of the mini fragment system, which offers the larger 2.7 mm module for the trauma segment of our team.

Every successful product release is a success story. I am humbled and proud knowing the complicated product system I focused all my energy and time on for the past few months is finally able to make a miraculous difference in someone’s life.

Senior Product Development Engineer Brittany Foslien; Arthrex Inc.

I was able to help develop the InternalBrace 2.0 system, which is offered in a variety of implant size and material options, including 3.5 and 4.75 mm diameters and with PEEK and BioComposite materials. The InternalBrace ligament augmentation repair system is used to treat ankle instability repairs and can be used for chronic ankle injuries and revisions.

It’s very rewarding to release a product that positively impacts surgeons and patients every day. I hear from surgeons who are pleased with the new InternalBrace 2.0 system since it meets the needs and requirements they’ve been wanting. From patients, we hear they have great outcomes with early mobility during recovery and are quicker to return to activity. The release of this product line was a collaborative team effort, and I feel honored and proud to have been a part of it.

Engineering Manager Stephanie Bare; Arthrex Inc.

A product line I am especially proud of is the KreuLock Locking Compression Screw family.  There are over 140 KreuLock screws across six screw families and come in a variety of sizing including 2.4 mm and 3.0 mm variable angle locking screws, a 3.0 mm variable angle locking hybrid screw and a 3.5 mm locking screw in titanium plus 2.7 mm and 3.5 mm stainless steel locking screws. These screws are designed to be used with any existing bone plate to secure it to the bone during an osteotomy, fracture or fusion repair and can be used instead of standard locking screws to provide increased compression within the bone under the plate, which promotes complete healing. This product is the only one of its kind on the market today.

It’s great! Not only do I appreciate hearing field reports of successful cases, I also enjoy seeing these products being integrated into new implant systems.
