5 Questions With Medical Education’s Santiago Oliveros Baena
Our 5 Questions series highlighting employees in various roles continues this week with Senior Medical Education Coordinator Santiago Oliveros Baena. Santiago started working at Arthrex as an International Operations Intern three years ago. During his internship, Santiago worked with several different departments: Medical Education, Product Management, Regional Management and International Human Resources. He was soon hired as a Medical Education Coordinator and the team significantly expanded over the past few years. Read on to learn about Santiago’s role on the team and more.
What does a typical day at Arthrex look like for you?
I focus on medical education events for the 18 countries we work with in Latin America and the Caribbean while also supporting the United States and Canada. I coordinate surgeon education trainings here in Naples as well as in Mexico and Brazil. I also coordinate single-day labs and workshops. I’m involved when the surgeons are onsite for events, especially during major events such as Cowboy Way, Team Physician Controversies (TPC) and the Orthopedic Technology and Innovation Forum (OTIF). Additionally, I am the global department data analyst and I collect all health care professional (HCP) training data worldwide and share with the team to ensure we are providing the highest quality education around the world.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I look forward to coming into work every single day. I have a great team and I enjoy interacting with surgeons and other health care professionals from all over the world. I get to hear their feedback about the courses and speak three different languages throughout my workday (English, Spanish and Portuguese). Even though Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, I am working to become more proficient in the language to better provide the best educational experience to our international surgeons.
My degree is in marketing with a minor in business management, so I never pictured myself working in Medical Education. Working at Arthrex made me realize that I’m capable of learning more and continuing to grow.
What has been a highlight during your time at Arthrex?
Attending the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting last year in San Diego. It’s the biggest event for our industry and I was given the opportunity to help represent Arthrex there and speak with international surgeons. It was really remarkable to see how our exhibit compared to our competitors’ and an all-around great experience.
What is the best advice you’ve received throughout your career?
That’s easy—and I echo this advice to other people—when you come across an opportunity, take it and own it. It may seem like the smallest responsibility, but if you have the ability to make something of it, do it. Make the best of every opportunity you get.
What do you do in your downtime?
I love to spend time with my family and friends. I enjoy going to the beach, watching movies and playing basketball and baseball. I recently purchased a condo, so a lot of my downtime lately has been focused on renovating it. I also really love to travel—I’m planning some international travel in 2019 and 2020.
