5 Questions With Quality Control’s Jiuhong (Jennie) Spears
Jiuhong (Jennie) Spears is a Quality Control Inspector III during the week and a hobbyist photographer on the weekends. Read her 5 Questions interview to learn the importance of her role, what she’s loved about working at Arthrex for the past nine years and the advice that inspires her.
What does a typical day at Arthrex look like for you?
My position is in Receiving Quality Control at the Arthrex Logistics Center (ALC) in Fort Myers, Florida. It’s a very important part of our company, because our job is to check and test all the products we receive from the vendors. I start by verifying that each part number, batch number, revision, quantity and purchasing order number match the certificate of compliance, packing list and goods receipt. We then conduct a series of different functional tests, check the dimensions on the part and compare that to the inspection card to make sure they’re acceptable. Finally, I check that the expiration and manufacturing dates are correct, enter my test results and usage decision in SAP, close the job and scrap the samples I used.
My job is to make sure that the products we’re sending to surgeons are high quality, so I truly feel like I’m Helping Surgeons Treat Their Patients Better™ every day.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love that I get to learn about so many of our products in my role. It’s challenging, but I like to learn new things, so it’s always exciting. I am so proud to work for Arthrex. That’s why I brought the Arthrex traveling flag with me to China recently. I wanted to show people that I work for the best company there is.
What has been a highlight during your time at Arthrex?
The most significant highlight would have to be my department. We are all friendly and supportive of each other. I appreciate my coworkers helping me when I need it and I do the same for them. We work well as a team.
What is the best advice you’ve received throughout your career?
During the nine years I’ve been here, I’ve seen the company grow very quickly. The best advice I’ve gotten is to always work hard and do your best. I consider myself very lucky to work at Arthrex and plan to keep doing my best as the company grows.
What do you do in your downtime?
My passion is photography and I really like to travel. I want to capture the beauty from all over the world with my photos. In my free time I photograph weddings, birthdays and family portraits. It makes me so happy to see that the people I’m photographing are happy!
I recently returned from a trip to China, starting with Nanning, the city I’m from. My husband David and I visited my family and I was able to explore so many beautiful places: The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, Yangshuo County, Lhasa, Tibet, Daocheng County, which is called the "last Shangri-La," and Potala Palace, where the Dalai Lama lived until 1959. I also spent the night at Base Camp on Mount Everest (or “Qomolangma”). I was so proud to bring the Arthrex flag on my trip and tell people where I work!
