Geography and Climate

Egypt is located in northeast Africa and is more than 95 percent desert. The only fertile area in Egypt is the Nile valley, which is more than 1,000 kilometers long and up to 15 kilometers wide.

Problems

There are many parents in the capital city of Cairo who cannot provide for their children due to poverty. As a result, a large number of children are homeless and live on the streets, where they are exposed to exploitation, violence and poor hygienic conditions on a daily basis. There is a shortage of sanitary facilities and accommodation to protect children against inclement weather. Many street children live on leftover food they find in bins and become ill as a result. Political disputes in the capital are also a contributing factor to the increase in child casualties due to demonstrations and street fighting.

Action

Due to the challenging political situation in Egypt, the project work which started on December 28, 2012 extended into late summer 2015. Arthrex supported this project by donating a total of 150.006,00 Euro.

Despite initial difficulties with implementing the project due to political unrest and restrictions, it has in the meantime been possible to take several measures to help street children in Cairo:

•  Providing street children with career prospects by running courses where they can learn technical skills
•  Increasing the children's self-confidence through participation in joint ventures
•  Training street workers to increase their social work expertise
•  Working together with families in the form of counseling sessions

Outcome of the Project

Plan set up mobile advice units as well as permanent facilities to offer street children in Cairo help and protection. These provided clothing or hot meals to children, as well as a safe refuge for a few hours. In addition, funding was provided for supervised accommodation for children and adolescents who can no longer return to their parental home. Offers of counseling and education as well as medical and psychological support were provided.
