Proximal Metatarsal Osteotomy

The powerful proximal first metatarsal osteotomy is commonly performed for moderate to severe IMA deformities. A transverse osteotomy is performed in the proximal 1/3 of the shaft of the first metatarsal taking care to leave the lateral cortex intact.  The osteotomy is then wedged open to close the IMA.  Locking or Nonlocking Plate fixation with a built in wedge is placed in the osteotomy site to ensure no loss of correction. The site is packed with autograft or allograft bone.
