Geography and Climate

Ghana is a country in West Africa. To the south it borders the Gulf of Guinea, to the north on Burkina Faso, to the west on the Ivory Coast and to the east on Togo. With an area of 238 537 km², Ghana is about the size of the United Kingdom. While the south of the country has a humid tropical climate, the north is more influenced by the Sahara. 28.8 million people live in Ghana, the capital is Accra.

Problems

Although Ghana has achieved significant economic success in recent years, living conditions in many places still lag behind this progress. People in rural areas are hardly benefiting. According to the 2018 UNICEF Report, only 66 percent of the population has access to drinkable water and only 9 percent to sanitary facilities. The World Health Organization estimates that most cases of malnutrition are due to diarrhea and worm infections. These, in turn, are caused by dirty water, lacking hygiene and poor sanitary conditions.

Objective of the Project

The goal of this project is to improve the sanitary and hygiene situation as well as the drinking water supply in 36 project communities. Around 32 000 community members will then have access to clean, affordable water and sanitation. To this end, 20 new wells will be dug and water supply points in schools, communities and health centers will be renovated. In the project communities, we will promote understanding of the relationship between hygiene, sanitation and disease prevention. At 36 project schools, around 12 000 children will then benefit from new toilets and washrooms.
